Efficiency in coalition games with externalities

چکیده

A natural extension of superadditivity is not sufficient to imply that the grand coalition is efficient when externalities are present. We provide a condition, analogous to convexity, that is sufficient for the grand coalition to be efficient and show that this also implies that the (appropriately defined) core is nonempty. Moreover, we propose a mechanism which implements the most efficient partition for all coalition formation games and characterizes the resulting payoff division. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. he Core in Games with egative Externalities

In this paper, we study games with externalities. In the presence of externalities, the worth of a coalition depends on the coalition itself and a partition of the player set. In the presence of externalities, superadditivity is no longer sufficient for the efficiency of the grand coalition: some partitions may yield more surplus than the grand coalition. This result was indicated by Hafalir (G...

Endogenous Formation of Economic Coalitions: A Survey on the Partition Function Approach

This paper surveys the recent literature on the endogenous formation of economic coalitions, in particular, the partition function literature that allows for externalities across coalitions. Various economic coalitions are classified either as coalitions with positive externalities (output cartels, R&D coalitions with spillovers, public-goods (environmental) coalitions, free-trade areas) or as ...

The Marginality Approach for the Shapley Value in Games with Externalities

One of the long-debated issues in coalitional game theory is how to extend the Shapley to games with externalities (partition-function games). When externalities are present, not only can a player’s marginal contribution to a coalition—a central notion to the Shapley value—be defined in a variety of ways, but it is also not obvious which axiomatization should be used. Consequently, a number of ...

Coalition Formation with Binding Agreements

We study coalition formation in “real time”, a situation in which coalition formation is intertwined with the ongoing receipt of pay-offs. Agreements are assumed to be permanently binding: They can only be altered with the full consent of existing signatories. For characteristic function games we prove that equilibrium processes—whether or not these are history dependent—must converge to effici...

Bidding and sequential coalition formation with externalities

We study a coalition formation game with externalities where each agent’s payoff depends on the entire partition (see, e.g., Bloch (1996)). As in Bloch (1996) and Ray and Vohra (1999), we assume that coalitions form sequentially and once a coalition forms, it cannot dissolve nor can its members forge new coalitions with the rest of the agents. However, instead of an exogenously given protocol, ...
